About Adam.
Filipino-American tenor Adam Catangui is currently studying at The Juilliard School in the Artist Diploma in Opera Studies program under the tutelage of Stephen Wadsworth and Kevin Short. Adam kicks off his 2025/2026 season in a recital of Rossini songs with The Juilliard School in collaboration with Columbia University to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Italian opera in New York City. He will also be seen in a Liederabend of quartets and quintets by Beethoven, Brahms, Mendelssohn, and Schubert. Adam will then debut as Fenton in Juilliard Opera’s production of Verdi’s Falstaff.
Adam’s 2024/2025 season included being the tenor soloist in the world premiere of Patrick Hawes’ The Son of Man joined by the Houston Symphony and Grammy-Award-winning Houston Chamber Choir. At Rice, he was seen in recital with bass-baritone Ryan McKinny and as Count Almaviva in John Corigliano’s The Ghosts of Versailles. At the 2025 National Opera Association Conference, Adam was named the 2nd place Constance Eberhart Memorial Award winner in the Carolyn Bailey Argento Competition. In the summer of 2025, Adam joined Wolf Trap Opera as a studio artist where he covered Chevalier de La Force in Dialogues des Carmélites and Remendado in Carmen.
In the summer of 2024, he debuted at the esteemed Verbier Festival in Switzerland as a part of their Atelier Lyrique. There, he sang the role of Don Curzio in Le Nozze di Figaro where he “unveiled a tenor with a rich core sound” (Pierre Géraudie, Olyrix). There, he was also seen in recital with renowned pianists Caroline Dowdle and James Baillieu. In addition to these performances, Adam participated in masterclasses led by Leo Nucci, Barbara Frittoli, Sandrine Piau, and Thomas Quastoff.
Adam had the honor of being a Gerdine Young Artist at Opera Theatre of St. Louis in both their 2022 and 2023 seasons. In his time at St. Louis, he had the opportunity to sing First Armed Man in The Magic Flute and sing selections from Florencia en el Amazonas, La Rondine, and Street Scene with the St. Louis Symphony. Additional training includes the Chautauqua Opera Conservatory where he debuted Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni.
Adam received his Bachelors of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music where he studied under the tutelage of Nicole Cabell. While at Eastman, he sang a diverse set of roles including: Miles (Proving Up), Jack (Into the Woods), Oronte (Alcina), and Arcadio (Florencia en el Amazonas). He is also the recipient of the Ornest Award which is presented to students who have shown excellence in academic and musical study. Upon graduating with Highest Distinction, Adam was inducted into Pi Kappa Lambda on the basis of his demonstration of leadership, integrity, and a high standard of achievement.
